  • Gosforth Academy to Install Major Solar Energy and Sustainability Upgrades

We are pleased to announce that Gosforth Academy has been selected to take part in the GB Solar Energy Programme, a national initiative helping public‑sector organisations generate clean energy and reduce long‑term energy costs.

We are pleased to announce that Gosforth Academy has been selected to take part in the GB Solar Energy Programme, a national initiative helping public‑sector organisations generate clean energy and reduce long‑term energy costs.

As part of this programme, Gosforth Academy will receive a comprehensive package of sustainability upgrades, including:

    • A large solar PV system expected to generate around 320,000 kWh of electricity per year
    • A full internal conversion to energy‑efficient LED lighting
    • The installation of electric vehicle charging points
    • New building‑performance sensors to better monitor energy use and support future improvements

The solar installation is scheduled for completion during the spring term. Over the lifetime of the project, these upgrades are expected to save approximately 1,456 tonnes of CO₂ and deliver an estimated £1.4 million in energy‑related savings, freeing up funds to enhance the student experience further.

Phil Barry, Gosforth Group Director of Estates and Facilities, said:
“Energy costs in older buildings pose a significant financial challenge. This project is a welcome initiative that will help the Trust meet its sustainability goals while delivering substantial savings and improving teaching and learning environments. Our partnership with SolarForSchools also provides extensive educational resources and workshops, giving students valuable hands-on opportunities to learn about wider environmental issues and their impacts.”

As a Trust, we look forward to the installation phase and to the positive impact this project will bring to the academy, its students and staff, and the wider community.
